Description

A powerful display of energy radiates from this oil painting. Thick impasto strokes build a tactile surface. The composition is dominated by a massive, glowing sphere. This celestial form pulses with fiery reds and golds. It anchors the scene with an almost mythological intensity.
Below this light, the sea churns in deep blues and greys. Vibrant splashes of red suggest the presence of boats amidst the waves. Two dark, silhouettes stand on the periphery. Their presence adds a human dimension to the vast natural spectacle. The artist uses a bold, expressionistic approach to blend representation with abstraction.
Every brushstroke feels intentional and rhythmic. The contrast between the cool water and the burning sky creates a dramatic tension. This artwork captures a fleeting moment of cosmic power. It transforms a traditional seascape into a symbolic exploration of light and shadow. The heavy application of pigment lends the scene a physical weight. It culminates in a vivid interplay of primary colors and raw texture.

Gia Khutsishvili, Two
Georgia  • 1966

Presentation

Gia Khutsishvili was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, on July 18, 1966, into a family of artists. He graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. Since 1990, Khutsishvili has been engaged in academic and pedagogical activities at the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts, where he has taught and contributed to the institution's educational programs. He has also taught painting and delivered lectures at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. Over the course of more than three decades, Khutsishvili has developed a sustained artistic practice alongside his academic, research, and cultural activities. He has participated in and contributed to numerous exhibition projects and cultural events and has been involved in the preparation of publications, books, and art albums. His professional activities also include research and translation. Khutsishvili occupies a distinctive position within the generation of Georgian artists that emerged in the 1990s. His practice is characterized by a sustained engagement with abstraction, symbolism, and metaphor, with mythological themes and imagery constituting an important component of his artistic vocabulary. Through these elements, his work explores questions of perception, interpretation, and the relationship between figurative references and abstract forms. Metaphor plays a fundamental role in Khutsishvili's artistic approach, functioning as a structural principle through which images, symbols, and meanings are brought into dialogue. His works reflect a consistent interest in developing an individual visual language grounded in abstraction while remaining connected to cultural, historical, and mythological references. Khutsishvili's works are held in museum collections and private collections in Georgia and internationally.
