Description
This work is built around the image of an axe — a simple and recognizable object that takes on a different presence within the space of the artwork. I am less interested in the literal meaning of the object than in its shape, character and visual weight. Here, the axe becomes a strong point within a more intuitive and freely constructed composition.
I developed the work gradually, allowing different elements to interact with each other. It combines painting, drawing and collage. All of the drawn details are created by hand, while selected fragments are physically attached to the surface of the work. I like the fact that paper, paint, line and accidental marks do not try to imitate one another, but remain visibly different materials within the same composition.
The collage elements are not simply decorative additions. They create another layer and slightly change the way the image is read. Text, paper texture and drawn forms exist next to each other, sometimes overlapping, but without filling the entire surface. I leave enough space for the composition to remain quiet and balanced.
The process itself is important to me. I do not want to completely control the final image before I begin. Some parts of the composition appear during the process — through a line, a mark, a layer of paint, a piece of paper or a decision that initially feels spontaneous but eventually becomes necessary to the whole work.
For me, the work is about the relationship between a recognizable image and a more abstract visual language. The axe remains identifiable, but around it another space begins to form, where shapes do not necessarily need to explain themselves literally. That uncertainty is what interests me.
I am not trying to make the work complicated for the sake of complexity. I prefer a certain restraint: a few strong forms, graphic details, texture and carefully placed fragments. The final image depends less on the number of elements and more on the way they exist together.
