Description
Created on the occasion of the 57th Venice Biennale, the work represents one of the foundational bodies of the "Aesthetica" cycle, the artist's investigation into the relationship between matter and the ontological dimension. The pictorial installation, articulated as a sequence of thirty elements, develops a reflection on the relationship between nature and transcendence, entrusting seriality with the task of establishing a contemplative rhythm. The use of oil, acrylic, and natural pigments reinforces the connection with the subject's primordial dimension, transforming the pictorial surface into a space of sensory experience.
The installation is documented in the official volumes of the Biennale and, through monographic articles, in numerous other publications devoted to the event, including "Espoarte – Speciale Biennale", Year XVIII, No. 97 (2017, ISSN 2035-9772), which features a text by Chiara Serri. The work is also examined in depth in the monograph "Daniele Bongiovanni. Exist", edited by Claudio Strinati (Silvana Editoriale, 2018, ISBN 9788836639793), and is also reproduced in the monograph "Daniele Bongiovanni. Con Pura Forma", edited by Francesco Poli (Edizioni Effigi, 2019, ISBN 9788864339689).
Presentation
Daniele Bongiovanni (Palermo, 11 April 1986) is a painter who graduated and completed his postgraduate studies with honours at the Academy of Fine Arts of Palermo.
His artistic practice investigates the relationship between nature and the human figure through a process of essentialisation, progressively reducing forms to their fundamental elements. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at numerous museums, including the GAM – Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Catania, the KCCC – Klaipėda Culture Communication Centre, Lithuania, the MACRO – Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Roma, and Palazzo Broletto, Pavia, Italy. He has also exhibited at the Fondazione Malvina Menegaz per le Arti e le Culture, Castelbasso, Italy, MACRO Testaccio, Rome, Palazzo Sant'Elia and RISO – Museo Regionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Palermo, and in major international contexts including the Venice Art Biennale.
Bongiovanni's works are held in several public and institutional collections, including those of the Embassies of Italy in Abu Dhabi, Helsinki, and London, the University of Urbino "Carlo Bo", Italy, Casa del Mantegna, Mantua, Italy, the Fondazione Malvina Menegaz, and the Rothko Museum, Daugavpils, Latvia.
Alongside his artistic practice, Bongiovanni is a professor of Fine Arts and teaches at several university institutions, including the Pantheon Institute of Design & Technology, Rome. He also collaborates with the US-based research organisation IVLA – International Visual Literacy Association, where he served for several years as a Member of the Board of Directors.
His academic and research activities have further led him to contribute to projects and programmes promoted by leading international institutions, including King's College London and Queen Mary University of London. He has participated in conferences and academic initiatives hosted by institutions including San Diego State University, California, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
