Description
A pivotal work within the "Aesthetica" cycle, the painting stands as one of the most representative moments in the artist's painterly research. The pictorial surface takes shape as a field of tensions in which the dialogue between matter, mark, and colour generates a dynamic equilibrium, suspended between compositional rigour and interpretive openness. The work reflects the artist's intention to move beyond a purely representational dimension and arrive at a meditation on the language of painting itself.
The painting was first presented in the solo exhibition "Con Pura Forma", curated by Francesco Poli, at the Raffaella De Chirico Arte Contemporanea gallery in Turin in 2019. It is also featured, among other publications, in the monograph "Daniele Bongiovanni. Con Pura Forma", edited by Francesco Poli (Edizioni Effigi, 2019, ISBN 978-8864339689).
Presentation
Daniele Bongiovanni (Palermo, 11 April 1986) is an Italian painter who graduated and completed his postgraduate studies with honours at the Academy of Fine Arts of Palermo.
His artistic practice investigates the relationship between nature and the human figure through a process of essentialisation, progressively reducing forms to their fundamental elements. His work is recognised for the recurring presence of white skies, a defining element of his painting.
Bongiovanni has presented his work in solo exhibitions at numerous museums and cultural institutions, including the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Catania (GAM), the Klaipėda Culture Communication Centre (KCCC), Lithuania, the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Roma (MACRO), and Palazzo Broletto, Pavia, Italy. He has also exhibited at the Fondazione Malvina Menegaz per le Arti e le Culture, Castelbasso, Italy, MACRO Testaccio, Rome, the Museo Regionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Palermo (RISO), and Palazzo Sant'Elia, Palermo, as well as in major international contexts, including the Venice Art Biennale.
Among those who have curated his solo exhibitions or written about his work are Marietta Franke, Rūta Giniūnaitė, Cecilia Paccagnella, Francesco Poli, Marzia Ratti, Claudio Strinati, Ermanno Tedeschi, and Susanna Zatti.
Bongiovanni's works are held in several public and institutional collections, including those of the Italian Embassies in Abu Dhabi, Helsinki, and London, the University of Urbino "Carlo Bo", Italy, Casa del Mantegna, Mantua, Italy, the Fondazione Malvina Menegaz, and the Rothko Museum, Daugavpils, Latvia.
Alongside his artistic practice, Bongiovanni is a professor of fine arts and teaches at several universities, including the Pantheon Institute of Design & Technology, Rome. He also collaborates with the US-based research organisation International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA), where he served on the Board of Directors for many years.
His academic and research activities have further led him to contribute to projects and programmes promoted by leading universities, including King's College London and Queen Mary University of London. He has participated in conferences and academic initiatives hosted by institutions including San Diego State University, California, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
