Description
This piece captures one of the most striking landmarks of the northern coast—the old Aniva Lighthouse, standing solitary upon a rocky outcrop. I was drawn not only to the lighthouse's unique architecture but, above all, to its condition: the marks left by time, the sense of silence and abandonment, and the contrast between this man-made structure and the rugged nature surrounding it.
For me, this image holds a profound emotional resonance. Once built to guide the way, the old lighthouse now stands as a witness to the passage of time. Its crumbling walls seem to hold memories of the past, while the surrounding landscape amplifies the sense of solitude and stillness.
I painted this work in oils on heavy art paper, using a palette knife. It was important for me to preserve expressive, lively brushwork and to treat texture as a distinct element of the painting. The palette knife allows me to build up surface relief, capturing the unevenness of the weathered walls, the texture of the rocks, and the play of light across the sky.
My goal was not merely to depict a famous location, but to convey its atmosphere—the silence, the ruggedness, and the unique beauty that emerges where humanity gradually yields space back to nature.
To me, this painting is about time, memory, and resilience. It speaks of places that endure in our memories even as the traces of human presence slowly fade away.
