Description

Holding (2026) captures the beginning of rediscovering oneself within a life that has already changed.

The painting emerged from Oxana Morasch's experience of the intense early period of motherhood. After months shaped by responsibility, closeness and exhaustion, the first small moments of calm, joy and personal space began to return. These moments did not represent a return to the person she had been before. Instead, they offered the first possibility of feeling and recognising herself again within a new reality.

The lighter, more open passages evoke this tentative return. Traces of earlier layers remain visible, preserving the presence of everything that came before. Nothing is presented as complete or resolved; the work remains within the fragile beginning of a process that is still unfolding.

Another quiet layer of the painting lies in the artist's growing understanding of her son's sensitivity. Through recognising his way of experiencing the world, Morasch also began to perceive and understand aspects of her own sensitivity differently.

Morasch's background in audiovisual media, photography and visual storytelling also informs her sensitivity to movement, layering and visual rhythm.

Holding does not describe a new equilibrium already achieved. It captures the first moments in which calm, joy, individuality and self-recognition begin to re-emerge within a life permanently transformed by motherhood.

Created entirely by hand in the artist's Berlin studio, Holding is a unique original acrylic painting on canvas. It is mounted on a wooden stretcher, signed on the reverse and accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity issued by Oxana Morasch.

Presentation

Oxana Morasch is a Berlin-based contemporary artist whose practice explores identity, memory, emotional transformation, and the transitional states that reshape our understanding of ourselves and others. With an academic background in Audiovisual Media and professional experience spanning photography, moving image, production, and visual storytelling, Morasch brings a distinctly cinematic sensitivity to painting. Working primarily with acrylic and mixed media, she develops her surfaces through successive processes of layering, concealment, disruption, and revelation. Lines change direction, forms emerge and disappear, while traces of earlier interventions remain visible beneath later layers, reflecting the way memory and identity continuously evolve. Her ongoing series, What Lives Within Us, All at Once, examines states of becoming—the uncertain territory between who we have been and who we are becoming. Motherhood and changing intergenerational relationships provide an intimate point of departure, opening onto broader questions of love, freedom, connection, childhood, loss, and transformation. Earth tones and ochres evoke origin and accumulated memory; blue introduces movement and transformation; recurring red traces suggest love and the persistence of emotional connection. Morasch deliberately avoids imposing a single interpretation, allowing personal experience to provide the emotional foundation while abstraction creates space for the viewer's own memories and associations. Her 2026 work Emerging, selected by the artist as particularly representative of her current direction, brings together these concerns through acrylic, texture paste, sand, and crackle techniques. Oxana Morasch lives and works in Berlin, Germany, and is represented internationally by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga.
