Description
Soulèves tes paupières closes is a diptych dedicated to Vaslav Nijinsky, a mythical figure of early 20th-century dance.
The painting focuses on this suspended moment between flight and fall. In the upper part, the dancer's body seems still carried by his own movement: the arms cross above the head, the face turns away, the figure appears to float in an almost vegetal substance. In the lower part, his reflection extends and decomposes into a blue depth, as if the movement continued elsewhere, in a darker space.
Nijinsky was one of the great performers and choreographers of the Ballets Russes. His body embodied a form of new freedom on stage, until upsetting the conventions of classical dance. But this dazzling trajectory was also that of a fall: after a few years of an exceptional career, illness brutally interrupted his relationship with the stage.
Through this portrait, the painting does not only seek to represent the dancer, but to bring forth the body between two states: the one that rises and the one that falls, the one still in movement and the one that already seems to be moving away.
The title evokes this fragile boundary between wakefulness and sleep, presence and absence, consciousness and surrender.

Presentation
Déborah Calfond (born in 1986) is a French visual artist whose practice unfolds between painting, drawing, and writing. A graduate in architecture, she develops a figurative and symbolic work where the body becomes the territory of memories, metamorphoses, and the invisible links that cross generations.
Through painting with mixed techniques and supports, sensitive and meticulous, she explores the themes of filiation, femininity, animality, and transmission. Nourished by mythology, founding narratives, and archetypes, her universe invites a reading of the human experience that is both intimate and universal.
Her works have been presented in personal and collective exhibitions in France and are regularly accompanied by projects combining writing, scenography, and performance.
