Description
In Mask, Nuno Viegas explores the codes of street art through a composition where the precision of the gesture meets a streamlined aesthetic. The artist détourns references from graffiti culture to reveal a more silent and contemplative dimension.
Through the play of forms, contrasts, and pictorial work, the piece invites a new look at the signs stemming from urban culture. It testifies to the singular approach of Nuno Viegas, who makes the energy of graffiti dialogue with the demands of contemporary painting.
Realized in acrylic on canvas, this unique piece asserts a strong visual presence. Its generous format and framing make it a work ready to be hung, ideal for bringing an artistic and contemporary dimension to an interior.
Presentation
Nuno Viegas, also known as Metis, is a Portuguese artist born in Faro (1985) and raised in Quarteira. Founder of the art collective Policromia Crew, he started his artistic journey with graffiti in 1999. After completing his studies in Visual Arts at the University of Algarve, he moved to Rotterdam in the Netherlands (2014) where he discovered a new artistic identity and began to develop his painting; strongly influenced by graffiti and the hip-hop subculture.
Viegas is not your average graffiti artist. Considering his young age, few can bridge the gap between graffiti culture and fine art while staying true to both as well as he does. Nuno presents us with a contrast between the visually aggressive reality of this subworld and his peaceful and clean representation in his works. His approach is a continuous tribute to all of those who dedicate part of their lives to this culture, in search of moments, for almost nothing, in the heart of a society whose main objective is the quest for money and power.
