Description
One of Rodin's favorite models was Adele Abruzzesi, whose supple and vigorous body inspired her with many feminine figures of great sensuality. The clay he modeled directly in front of the model or made to stamp in a mold to rework it later, is the ideal material of the sketch by its ability to evoke the velvety of the skin. In virtuoso modeling, Rodin has reached this chest to evoke the sweetness of the belly, the arch of the kidneys, and up to the weight of the breasts.
The sculptor liked very much this study, carried out perhaps as early as 1878 to create a caryatid. He completed it by adding legs and arms to use in the upper left corner of The Door of Hell. Slightly modified, with a head, this torso also served as a base for the female character of L'Eternel Printemps.
(The Baroque frame is part of the work).
