Description
Graphite and acrylic on linen

This fluid abstract painting is intuitively made with a loaded brush graphite and acrylic on linen.

The intersecting multi-layered forms create richly worked surfaces that refer neither to narrative or image but develop out of the discourse and physicality of the painting process.

They are influenced by the edge and the grid of the two dimensional picture plane and evoke the liminal space between sensation and memory.
Margaret Neill, Estuary 1

Presentation

Margaret Neill is an American abstract artist originally from Ohio. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Neill obtained a Bachelor's degree in arts at the Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio, in 1978. She then obtained her Masters degree in Fine Arts at the Brooklyn College in New York in 1984.

Neill draws her inspiration from fluid geometric qualities of curves and lines, especially in the way in which the natural qualities of the earth and the sky blend with the urban elements, objects and architecture. Partially enlightened by models observable in human and natural phenomena such as buildings, maps and meteorological models, his work emerges from an ephemeral and intuitive state, giving birth to objects and images that convey a sense of complexity, serenity and flow.

The artist uses various materials to create lyrical and gestural images illuminated by non-representative curves and shapes. Neill creates works on canvas, linen and paper using a variety of mediums such as graphite, colored pencil, charcoal and paint. His process involves an intuitive marking of the surface resulting in continuous, interlaced and geometric lines.
His work refers to many qualities of lyrical abstraction. His process is instinctive and not representative. His work transcends objective interpretation, inviting the spectator to participate in the exploration of the artist's relationship with time and space.

In 2009, abstract artist and art artist Steven Alexander wrote about the artist:
"The images are simple curves and crossed geometries, fragments of infinite configurations that form targeted interactions between light and darkness - an elegant fusion between physical reality and grace ... These works are beautifully direct and sensual."

Neill's work is presented in various museums as well as in various international and corporate collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, Martin Brest, Los Angeles and the United States Department of State. She has exhibited her paintings and drawings in numerous individual and collective exhibitions in museums and galleries nationwide.
His work has been widely published, and numerous blogs, television shows, radio broadcasts and press articles have been devoted to him.
