Description
This artwork, a pastel drawing, depicts a pair of scissors with striking simplicity. The thick black lines perfectly capture the object's form and function, highlighting the rounded contours of the handles and the tapered blades. The absence of color accentuates the raw, minimalist aspect, lending depth to the pastel texture. The contrast between the off-white background and the bold strokes gives the everyday object a commanding presence. In the era of networks saturated with images and discourses, Suzanne Cara-Apo, known as "Apo", chooses another path: the raw gesture, the trace, the void.
His works, created in ink or acrylic, seem to evoke a forgotten language, somewhere between abstraction and suggestion. There's no message to decode here: each sign is a presence, each form a breath. White isn't just a void: it's active silence, contained tension, breathing.
Her work is part of the tradition of gestural abstraction, which she subverts with a resolutely contemporary sensibility. Halfway between painting, calligraphy, and mental archaeology, each work stands on the edge—between mastery and abandon, between symbol and material.
Apo's work cannot be interpreted. It must be felt. It opens up a free, shifting space, where everyone is invited to project their own, necessarily subjective, interpretation. The artist invites us to slow down and look differently.
