Description

Mesa Verde National Park, in Colorado. The ancient architecture of Cliff Palace at Dusk. Pueblo culture site dwelling of the house with rooms and kivas is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The place has a spiritual eerie sense and historical significance of the primal creation of the home and its importance. Artwork is digitally adapted photography printed on archival fine art paper.

This evocative and masterfully captured black-and-white photograph presents an awe-inspiring glimpse into an ancient cliff dwelling, likely from the Ancestral Puebloans (Anasazi) civilization. The striking composition focuses on the meticulous stone construction, highlighting both the ingenuity and craftsmanship of this long-gone society. In the foreground, we see a space that may have served as a communal area, framed by jutting stone slabs and fragmentarily preserved walls. The cracked and worn ground evidences the passage of time, drawing the viewer’s attention to the historical significance embedded within each stone. The middle and background are dominated by the commanding presence of multi-storied ruins. Narrow, rectangular doorways punctuate the walls, suggesting a compact yet intricate interior layout. The texture of the stone, captured with precision, emphasizes the manual labor and dedication that went into its creation. Shadows cast by overhead structures create dramatic contrasts, enhancing the depth and adding a layer of mystery to the scene. This artwork’s monochromatic palette serves to strip away the distractions of color, focusing the viewer's attention on the essential elements of form, texture, and light. The overall atmosphere is one of quiet reverence and poignant nostalgia, urging contemplation of human perseverance and the ephemeral nature of civilizations. The photograph succeeds in not only presenting a historically rich subject but also in doing so with a remarkable aesthetic that bridges the past and the present. Through its detailed observation and poignant composition, this artwork stands as a compelling reminder of our shared heritage and the timeless beauty of ancient architectural marvels. This powerful image not only serves as a historical document but also as an artistic exploration of endurance, community, and time

Presentation

Jarmila Kostliva's photographic series is much more than a collection of images — it's an evocative journey, an elegant fusion of memory, place, and spirit that invites the viewer into a deeper dialogue with the world. These ten photographs illustrate Kostliva's deft ability to speak not only through visual form, but through emotional resonance. Across diverse geographies — from desert expanses to tropical calm, from historic adobe villages to nightly neon motion — each frame carries a palpable sense of place, memory, and layered history. Her work consistently invites the viewer to slow down, to breathe with the moment, and to consider how environments shape not just what we see, but how we feel and remember.
With every composition, she navigates the delicate balance between what is seen and what is felt, revealing the intricate poetry of existence. This portfolio doesn't just document a world — it beckons one to inhabit it.
