Description
This artwork captures an intriguing view of an artist’s studio, where light floods through large, skylit windows, casting dynamic shadows across the space. The composition is dominated by a mannequin positioned on a stool, clad in undergarments that evoke a sense of vulnerability and theatricality. Surrounding this central figure are several large canvases, each depicting realistic female figures, further amplifying themes of perception and representation. Brushes and paints are scattered across the floor, suggesting an ongoing creative process. The juxtaposition of the lifelike paintings and the inanimate mannequin creates tension, inviting viewers to ponder the boundary between reality and illusion. The high ceiling and exposed beams add an architectural elegance, making the studio itself a vital component of the artwork. This meticulous arrangement, combined with the monochromatic palette, enhances the introspective atmosphere, inviting contemplation on the nature of art and the art of creation itself.
The "Artist Atelier" series combines architecture, sculpture/painting and the female nude. The idea was to create a balance between three subjects, one not overpowering the other. For this reason, Arbeit placed the model towards the back of the photograph, knowing she would control the viewer's eye.
Presentation
With over four decades of experience in the industry, Mark Arbeit has established himself as a master of fashion, portraiture, and fine art photography. While studying at Art Center College of Design, he met Helmut Newton, the beginning of a 25-year mentorship and friendship. Upon finishing his studies, he moved to New York, where he worked in the studio of Irving Penn.
Arbeit began his own career in 1980 in Milano, shooting fashion and portrait editorials for Linea Italiana, Amica and Vogue Bellezza magazine. In 1985, he settled in Paris to further his career and began working on the "In and Out of Focus" series, focusing sharply on the flower in the foreground while in the background, out of focus, the female nude plays against the shape of the bloom.
Arbeit continued work editorially, splitting his time between Paris and New York, shooting fashion for French Vogue and Marie Claire, and portraits for In Style and Forbes. In 1991 Arbeit launched "Artist Atelier", female nudes in painter/ sculpture studios throughout Paris.
His works are in the permanent collection of the Helmut Newton Foundation.
