Artwork location: France

This artwork by Benoit Ruff, created in Hong Kong in 2007, is a striking example of abstract photography that explores the rhythmic energy of a metropolis through vertical light distortion.

While his Monaco series often focuses on circular bokeh, this Hong Kong piece shifts toward a linear, vertical abstraction.

Vertical Lines: The image is defined by elongated, vertical streaks of light. These lines vary in width and intensity, creating a sense of rapid movement—much like looking out the window of a fast-moving vehicle or a long-exposure shot of a bustling street.

Color Palette: The composition is dominated by high-contrast primary and secondary colors:

Electric Blues: Cool, vibrant streaks on the left provide a technological, "cyberpunk" feel.

Intense Reds: On the right, a dense grid-like pattern of red lights suggests the tail lights of dense traffic or neon signage.

Muted Yellows and Greens: Vertical bands in the center soften the transition between the harsher blue and red tones.

The "Grid" Effect: Unlike the soft, vaporeuse (hazy) quality of his Monaco works, this Hong Kong piece features a distinct, repetitive grid pattern within the red sections, emphasizing the architectural density and digital nature of the city.

In this series, Benoit Ruff continues his "deconstruction of urban light." By stripping away recognizable landmarks, he captures the "essence" of Hong Kong—a city defined by verticality, neon saturation, and constant motion. The grain and texture of the image give it a tangible, analog feel despite its futuristic subject matter.
