Jan Nomis

Jan Nomis is a contemporary French artist born in Marseille in 1954 whose path defies conventions, shaped by years of atypical experiences. Although he initially followed a path unrelated to the art world, he has simultaneously nurtured his artistic inclinations with passion. Like many great artists before him, Jan Nomis is entirely self-taught, navigating the vast domain of creativity with an insatiable curiosity and a desire to explore.

Throughout his artistic journey, Jan Nomis has been deeply influenced by certain artistic masters, drawing inspiration from their work and techniques. However, what sets him apart is his relentless quest to develop a unique, distinctive, and original style that reflects the essence of his creative vision.

Nomis's artistic expression moves away from traditional forms of illustration or narrative storytelling. Instead, he transcends the simple representation of objects or scenes, delving into the realm of sensations evoked by visual experiences. His paintings capture not the tangible, but the intangible: emotions, moods, and visceral reactions that stem from his observations.

A determining characteristic of Jan Nomis's art is his creation of a complex alphabet of organic forms. This evolving alphabet serves as the basis for his artistic language, a visual tool enriched by his constantly evolving emotions and inspirations. With it, he constructs modifiable words and phrases at will, all devoid of a predefined message or narrative. What captivates him is the inherent power of the sign itself, devoid of any specific meaning or history.

Within this artistic framework, Nomis creates a unique style where forms and colors adapt and interact with each other. This dynamic composition process is characterized by both structural rigor and creative freedom, giving rise to works of art that are both dark and luminous, chaotic yet harmonious.

The result is a world in perpetual search of itself, marked by tension and chaos, but within which an intriguing and enigmatic harmony emerges, resonating deep within the soul of the viewer.

He likes to say that he does not know what he is looking for but that he knows when he has found it.
