Description
This monochrome portrait captures a moment of quiet introspection. The lighting is dramatic and focused. A soft glow illuminates the face while deep shadows swallow the background. The subject rests with crossed arms. Her gaze is distant yet piercing. This composition evokes a timeless cinematic quality.
Captured in 1964, the image reflects the artist's mastery of light and form. This American photographer drew from his early training as a painter. His eye for composition transforms a simple pose into a powerful study of human emotion. The high contrast of the silver print enhances the texture of the skin and the depth of the dark attire.
The artwork belongs to a series documenting iconic figures. It balances raw intimacy with formal precision. The balance of tones creates a moody atmosphere. This silver print showcases a sophisticated approach to black and white photography. Every detail emphasizes the silent dialogue between the subject and the lens. The image remains an evocative example of mid-century portraiture.
Presentation
Born in 1931, Will McBride was an American artist. Primarily a photojournalist and art photographer, he also produced illustrations, paintings and sculptures.
Initially trained as a painter under Norman Rockwell, McBride graduated from Syracuse University in 1953, having studied drawing and painting. After serving in Germany as part of the US army, McBride remained in Berlin, documenting post-war youth culture. His works were the subject of widespread censorship due to his explicit depictions of nudity.
McBride died in 2015. The Will McBride archive in Germany houses the majority of his work.
