Description
This captivating work captures with striking acuity the world of a funfair in full swing. The background is dominated by colourful and distinct structures: a large yellow and blue tent, perhaps symbolising a circus tent, and a sharply detailed green caravan, alluding to itinerant living spaces. The vibrant yellow and deep blue of the tent evoke a sense of nostalgia and wonder, reinforcing the idea of a place imbued with magic and mystery. The foreground, however, is what makes the image truly intriguing. A blurred silhouette, suggesting rapid movement, occupies the centre, creating a striking contrast with the sharpness and stillness of the elements in the background. This juxtaposition of movement and stability can be interpreted as a commentary on the hustle and bustle of contemporary life in relation to immutable and familiar structures. The distortion and anonymity of the human figure adds a layer of mystery and personal interpretation. The artist cleverly uses blur to convey a sensory experience rather than a literal representation, prompting the viewer to imagine the story behind the movement. The colour palette is carefully chosen to evoke the warmth and liveliness of a fair day, while creating a visual tension between warm tones and cool shadows, set against a pale grey sky that could suggest a storm or simply the end of the day. In all, this work offers a fascinating dissection of the vibrant energy and charm of fairground life, capturing both the joy of colour and the frenzy of human movement in a single, timeless shot.
Presentation
She began photography 7 years ago, after a few years of painting. She had a desire to create quickly and more spontaneously. She likes telling stories, showing her desire, sorrows, the missing element, secrets through her photos.
Cécile Baldewyns's work mainly addresses self-portraits under all kinds of forms. Improvisation, research and stagings. A daily work to listen to her emotions, a conceptual approach which brings her greater exposure on social networks.
The artist rarely exhibits in Belgium where she lives, but she exhibits on social networks where it's possible to realize the prolific quality of her work. Narcissistic, unique, sensual and disturbing is how one can define Cecile Baldewyns's photos.
The artist plays around with gravity which can be shown through languid poses, dramatic staging with a wild décor.
But is it all that simple? Isn't there anything else behind these hundreds of photos than just a one sided game that Cecile Baldewyns shows us through hints? Is this stage and the tormented dancing actually a personal diary, undulating feelings of a creative woman?
