Untitled 1, 2013

Arslan Sükan

Untitled 1 from the series of INtheVISIBLE, 2013 by Arslan Sukan Archival inkjet print on baryta photographic paper Edition 1/3 + 1AP. Additional sizes and prints are available.

Sukan’s photographic work explores the conventions of the modern white cube as both an architectural context and as a content subject in and of itself. By addressing the notions of spatial memory, presentation, and representation, this exhibition enhance the confrontation between visibility and invisibility in social and phenomenological terms. By means of deconstruction, intervention, and reconstruction of the white cube, Sukan brings complicity between opposites and creates dualism between recognition and non-recognition, visibility and invisibility, abstraction, and concrete concepts. The result is an entirely new space, an architecture of past and future, with a continuously shifting viewpoint. Sukan proposes a phenomenal situation, challenging the viewer on the realism of the photograph and the memory of a space, while also opening up the horizons of the viewer’s perception and interpretation of the exhibition's/ their own immediate setting.

This artwork compellingly blends architectural precision with minimalist design. The composition features an expansive, open room with a meticulously polished wooden floor, extending into the distance. The dual vanishing points, created by stark white walls, generate a sense of infinite space, inviting the viewer to explore its depth. Overhead, industrial lighting fixtures align symmetrically, casting a uniform glow and enhancing the linear perspective. A central air duct dominates the ceiling, contributing to the piece’s industrial ambiance. The structural contrasts between the raw, exposed ceiling beams and the clean, smooth floor invite contemplation on urban modernity. This interplay of elements challenges perception, offering a dynamic experience that evokes both emptiness and possibility.
