Description
This original collage by Jiří Kolář dates from 1968 and is a refined example of the artist's pioneering approach to visual poetry and image appropriation. The composition presents a vertical sequence of butterflies, meticulously constructed from cut fragments of a work by Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
Butterflies play a recurring role in Kolář's oeuvre and function here as symbols of transformation, fragility, memory, and cultural migration. By using Renoir's imagery to build these forms, Kolář creates a dialogue between classical painting and postwar conceptual art.
Using mixed collage techniques on cardboard, the work demonstrates Kolář's exceptional precision in cutting, assembling, and recontextualizing existing artworks. Rather than producing new imagery, he reshapes art history itself into a new visual language.

Jiří Kolář (1914– died 2002) was one of the most influential Czech artists of the twentieth century and a key figure in postwar avant-garde art. Initially active as a poet, Kolář expanded language into the visual realm, developing an innovative body of work he described as visual poetry. From the 1950s onward, he became internationally known for his experimental collage techniques, including chiasmages, rollages, froissages, and intercollages. His work often addressed themes of political oppression, memory, freedom, and the fragmentation of modern experience. After facing censorship in communist Czechoslovakia, Kolář later lived in Paris, where he achieved wide international recognition.
