Presentation

Yrjö Edelmann is a Swedish artist born in 1941 in Helsinki, Finland, and died in 2016. He settled with his family in Sweden in 1951 and developed an interest in drawing very early on. He began by creating comic strips and then worked for several years as an illustrator in Stockholm for the publishing house Åhlén & Åkerlund, creating, among other things, book covers and various works for the press. He also studied drawing at the Stockholm School of Applied Arts before pursuing his education at the Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design.

After his beginnings in illustration, Yrjö Edelmann gradually dedicated himself to oil painting and graphic arts. During a stay in the United States, he met the American painter James Rosenquist, a major figure in Pop Art, whose influence accompanied the evolution of his practice. In the 1970s, Edelmann gradually developed his personal artistic language, situated at the border of realism, hyperrealism, and surrealism. His first exhibition was presented in 1973.

Yrjö Edelmann is particularly known for his trompe-l'œil paintings, in which he represents with spectacular precision crumpled papers, packages, envelopes, twine, or even napkins. These ordinary objects become enigmatic subjects under his brush that sometimes seem to emerge from the surface of the canvas. The viewer is thus confronted with a carefully constructed visual illusion: the folds, shadows, tears, reflections, and variations of light are reproduced with such meticulousness that the wallpaper appears almost real.

The artist also plays with the notions of reality and illusion, transforming familiar objects into ambiguous images. Some of his compositions give the impression of presenting rolled or packaged canvases, while others evoke landscapes or more abstract forms. His painting thus rests on a tension between the simplicity of the subject and the sophistication of its execution. The colors, proportions, shadows, and textures contribute to this perceptual experience that invites the gaze to question what it believes it sees.

Throughout his career, Yrjö Edelmann has gained international recognition. His works are exhibited in Sweden as well as in New York, Tokyo, and Paris, and are continuously exhibited in the United States since 1976. Among his solo exhibitions are notably Wrapping Up the Force of Perspective at the Museum of Art and Design of Singapore in 2012, Structure and Spectrum: New Paintings by Yrjo Edelmann at Scott Richards Contemporary Art in San Francisco in 2013, as well as Heat, Work & Energy at the Galleri GKM Siwert Bergström in Malmö in 2015. In 2005, he also participated in the second Beijing Art Biennale.

Yrjö Edelmann's works are featured in several museum and institutional collections, including those of the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Malmö Museum, and the Denver Art Museum. His work is today associated with a singular form of hyperrealistic painting and contemporary trompe-l'œil, in which the artist transforms everyday objects into true visual enigmas. By giving an almost monumental dimension to elements as ordinary as crumpled paper or a tied package, Edelmann questions the boundary between representation and reality and demonstrates the power of pictorial illusion.
