Origin: France
Technique and medium: Lithograph on Japanese paper.
Dimensions: 33 x 52 cm (image 12 x 18 cm).
Provenance: Genevieve and Jean Paul Kahn collection.
Particularities of the work: Original print monogrammed FL by hand by the artist in pencil at the bottom right and numbered III/VI. This artist's proof was published in addition to the unsigned edition of 120 copies of illustration 3 of the tribute book to Paul Eluard "A poem in each book" published by Louis Broder in 1956. In the book, illustration 3 is positioned next to Paul Eluard's poem "Chassé". The work comes from the album called "Album A", Reprinted from the book in 20 copies. Each album contains, like the book, 16 prints (including this work by Fernand Léger) but they were printed with wide margins and unlike the prints in the book, they are all signed or monogrammed by the artists. The album we have was the property of the publisher Louis BRODER. It stands out from the others because it is enriched in addition to the 16 large-margined illustrations with many other prints collected by the publisher throughout his collaboration with the artists on this book.
Expert's comment: Fernand Léger and Paul Eluard is the story of a reciprocal admiration which begins with their frequentation of avant-garde circles in the 1920s. The poet collects the works of the artist and artist does not hesitate to integrate verses of the poet in his works. It is therefore not surprising to find this magnificent lithograph in "a poem in each book" illustrating the "hunted" poem by Paul Eluard. In 1952, ten years after the artist's death, Fernand Leger illustrated the 21 stanzas of the famous poem "Liberté".

Explanatory photo 5: Original print signed and printed with large margins by Max Ernst, contained in album A

Fernand Léger was born on 4 February 1881 in Argentan (Orne) and died on 17 August 1955 in Gif-sur-Yvette (Essonne). He is a representative of the cubist current. His version of it is also called by critics "tubism", due to his preference for tubular forms. His style is close to Italian futurism, especially in his series of workers on scaffolds.
Fernand Léger studied in Paris, at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. His first works are influenced by Impressionism, but after discovering the work of Paul Cezanne, he shifted towards cubism.
In 1907, he moved to "La Ruche" (artist's studios in Paris), where he met numerous painters, including Paul Cézanne, Braque and Picasso. He was mobilized in 1914for service in the French Army, which marked a break in his work. At the front, he drew in the trenches; he was hospitalized and then sent home in 1917. He got married and moved to Vernon. Mechanical elements become more and more present in his works.
During the 20s he had a very productive period: he had numerous commissions and met many artists including Le Corbusier. He also worked for the cinema. His first big exhibition was held in Chicago in 1935.
At the breaking of World War II, he moved to New York. Many of his friends were also in exile in the US: André Breton, Masson, Tanguy, Ernst, Chagall, Mondrian. He returned to France in 1945, where he joined the Communist Party (with Picasso, among others) and defended ideas such as realism in art.
Fernand Léger was also the Director of painting schools, such as the Montrouge and Montmartre schools, where students such as Louise Bourgeois or Serge Gainsbourg were trained.
