Description

Untitled II, by Luis Caballero Lithograph Size: 15" H x 10.7" W Edition 8/75 Signed in the lower right corner. Numbered in the lower left corner. Provenance: Private collection. Unframed

This artwork captivates with its powerful depiction of human vulnerability and tension. Rendered in meticulous detail, it portrays an intense moment of struggle or revelation. A prominent hand grasps the fabric, pulling it taut across the subject's torso, revealing both strength and delicacy. The artist expertly contrasts light and shadow, enhancing the dramatic effect and highlighting the contours of the body. The interlacing of fingers and the fabric creates a dynamic interplay, evoking feelings of confinement and liberation. Each line is deliberate, capturing the texture of skin and cloth with remarkable precision. This piece stands out for its emotional depth and technical prowess, inviting viewers to interpret the narrative behind the image.

Luis Caballero's passionate and erotic paintings of nude figures rendered in deep red, black and neutral tones combine themes of sensuality, cruelty and violence. Born in Colombia to a conservative Catholic family, Caballero found inspiration in the restrained works of Juan Antonio Roda, with whom he studied at the Universidad de los Andes, and later in the sexually liberated streets of Paris, where he He settled in 1969 and lived until his death in 1995. Caballero considered his homosexuality central to his artistic practice and painted many large, tumultuous scenes of moving torsos and appendages. His work was presented at the 1969 Paris Biennale and the 1984 Venice Biennale. Since 1996, the city of Bogotá has annually awarded the Luis Caballero Prize to a mid-career Colombian artist in honor of his legacy artistic.

Presentation

Luis Caballero (1943-1995) is a Colombian artist and one of the most important Latin American sketchers of his century. He started with the Baconian expressionism and ascended to romanticism and mannerism until he reached his freedom: Michelangelo.  He had emigrated to France to escape the homophobia that prevailed in Colombia. Religion and passion dominate the work of this young Colombian to whom religious painting offered the first contact with art in a country where there are very few museums.
