Description
John Coburn is known for his abstract paintings and textile works that are full of dynamic shapes and harsh colors. Referencing biomorphic forms, they reflect his admiration for the modernist art of luminaries like Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro and Henri Matisse. First trained as a graphic designer, Coburn made his name working as an upholsterer for a workshop in Aubusson, near Paris, in the late 1960s. His fabric designs have adorned the interiors of notable monuments, from the Opera in Sydney at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Coburn developed his style of abstract painting in the 1970s, drawing inspiration from Aboriginal spirituality as well as European art history.
