Shepard Fairey (OBEY) Hand Signed and Numbered Lithograph “Peter Tosh: Legalize It”Original illustration from a photograph by Kate Simon.122/500 copiesTechnique: Screenprint on 300gsm cream Speckletone fine art paperSigned, dated and numbered by handABOUT:October 19th would have been Peter Tosh’s 80th birthday if he were still alive. Tosh is best known as the co-founder of The Wailers with Bob Marley and Bunny Livingston, with whom he had several ska hits and pioneered the reggae sound. It was actually Tosh who taught Bob Marley how to play guitar. Tosh and Marley co-wrote Wailers classics such as “Get Up Stand Up” and “400 Years.” After leaving the Wailers in 1974, Tosh released his first solo album “Legalize It” in 1976, which sold well and became a cultural touchstone for the cannabis legalization movement (a movement I have supported for many years and for many reasons). Tosh’s solo output continued to make waves with albums like “Equal Rights” and “Bush Doctor,” which featured collaborations with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones and introduced Tosh to an even wider audience. I am fortunate to be able to collaborate again with photographer Kate Simon on this portrait of Tosh taken in 1976, around the time of the release of “Legalize It,” a significant moment in Tosh’s career. Read what Kate has to say about working with Tosh below, and check out her book “Rebel Music” from Genesis Publications!-BergerPeter Tosh was one of the most politically conscious musical artists of all time. He was bold and outspoken in speaking out against injustice and fearlessly resisted oppression. In the public eye he stood tall, radiating uncompromising strength. Those who knew him intimately, however, were able to experience his warmth and humour in moments of indifference. He was a superb photographic subject. I did not find him intimidating despite his size and presence, but rather charismatic with that incredible speaking voice. I loved photographing him doing karate, “reasoning” and smoking weed in Tommy Cowan’s garden. I have photographed Peter many times over the years, on and off stage, including at the One Love Peace concert where he was captivating. A lion heart!-Kate SimonReinforced packaging - Shipped by international courier.Brand new and original packaging. Presentation

Shepard Fairey, aka Obey, is an American street artist and graphic designer born in 1970 in Charleston, United States. Passionate about graphic design since the age of 14, he began by creating designs for t-shirts and skateboards. Influenced by Andy Warhol and Alexander Rodchenko, he quickly turned to artistic studies.

In June 2025, Shepard Fairey unveiled a monumental mural on the façade of Paris City Hall as part of the exhibition “From Paris to Belém: 10 Years of Global Climate Action”, celebrating a decade of international commitment following the Paris Agreement. True to his instantly recognizable visual language, the artist created a work featuring his iconic palette of red, blue and cream, combined with powerful messages such as “Respect Earth” and “Resist Unite”. This public artwork highlights the continuity of his practice between street art, political graphic design and environmental activism, reinforcing his position as a major figure in the development of contemporary urban art.

At the end of the 1980s, while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Shepard Fairey launched the “André the Giant Has a Posse” campaign with several friends. This graphic experiment was based on the distribution of stickers and posters in public spaces. The image of wrestler André The Giant quickly became a visual symbol, spreading clandestinely across American cities. This initiative became a landmark moment in the history of American street art, demonstrating the artistic potential of posters, stickers and screen printing as independent forms of visual expression.

In 2008, Shepard Fairey achieved international recognition with the iconic HOPE poster, created during Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. The artwork became a symbol of contemporary political communication and illustrated the artist’s ability to transform graphic design, contemporary screen printing and popular culture codes into powerful collective images. In 2024, he continued this politically engaged approach with the poster “Forward”, created in support of Kamala Harris and inspired by the visual language developed for HOPE. In 2021, he also created a contemporary reinterpretation of Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic, combining urban art, national identity and a universal message about freedom.

Despite several controversies related to intellectual property and copyright issues, Shepard Fairey remains one of the most influential figures in American contemporary art. His works have been exhibited internationally, while his monumental murals, original screen prints, posters and works on paper are highly sought after by contemporary art collectors. In 2022, he created a monumental mural in Munich in collaboration with the Department of Art and Culture, focusing on renewable energy issues.

Through an artistic practice at the crossroads of street art, contemporary graphic design, socially engaged art and popular culture, Shepard Fairey has demonstrated for decades the power of images as tools for social and political awareness. His work continues to explore the relationship between artistic creation, visual communication and collective change, making him one of the most influential artists in international contemporary street art.
