Description
Produced in 1959, this lithograph is part of a period when Bernard Lorjou developed an expressive figuration, on the fringes of the dominant abstract movements.
The artist explores a human figure in a monumental form, without narration, imposing a presence. The deep gaze, the angular features, the chromatic tension and the vitality of the gesture: all combine to create a disturbing, almost theatrical presence. Nevertheless, it is the melancholy that emerges from it that gives this work its intensity, making it both gripping and touching.
This work goes beyond a simple portrait and reflects Lorjou's obsession with the human condition. As he himself states: "The true subject of art is man in his universe." The title certainly evokes a mythical sovereignty, but it is the world of his time, that of post-war upheavals and deep social fractures, that lies at the heart of his artistic approach.
This lithograph, printed in 75 copies, bears the number 54 and the artist's handwritten signature.
Presentation
Bernard Lorjou, born in Blois on September 9, 1908, and died in Saint-Denis-sur-Loire on January 26, 1986, is a French painter and engraver (lithography, etching and woodcut). At the end of the Second World War and during the 1950s, he was, along with Bernard Buffet, Jean Carzou, Alfred Manessier and a few others, one of the most cited and most famous French painters of the time.
