Superimposition Series (2021 - ongoing)

We are conditioned to perceive time as a linear sequence—past, present, future—each moment moving inevitably toward the next. Yet, through the act of rearranging and superimposing the images from (2020-2021), a new conception of time unfolds. In this series, the chronology dissolves, revealing a dynamic, non-linear experience of temporality. The rigid framework of time, as we know it, fractures, and what emerges is an expansive simultaneity: the portraits, once tethered to specific days, now exist together on the same plane, untethered by the calendar. What was once a series of isolated, individual moments—the brightest of their respective days—now converges, coexisting in a single, ever-present continuum.

The original portraits, each an intimate reflection of a day's peak, were often marked by faint stripe patterns and muted tones. From a distance, they could appear monochrome, yet upon closer inspection, layers of soft color emerge, subtle and expansive. These gentle hues—once almost imperceptible—become magnified through the process of superimposition, multiplying and blending, creating richer, more vibrant palettes. The once-muted tones summon depth and complexity, as the quiet whispers of color accumulate and intersect, forming a tapestry of ever-evolving vibrancy.

In this series, time is no longer confined to the neat categories of past and future. Instead, it unfurls in a dynamic present, where moments overlap and coexist, where subtlety becomes saturation and fragmentation becomes unity. The work is both a meditation on memory—how we recall, distort, and reconfigure—and on the boundless potential of time itself, unanchored and infinitely mutable.

Presentation

Jan Wold (b. 1979) is a Brazilian-Norwegian artist of Japanese heritage whose practice is a sustained meditation on time, impermanence, and transformation. Working across sculpture, installation, and photography, he explores how materials unfold, erode, and recombine—not simply as alchemical processes, but as reflections on the lived experience of duration. Each work functions as a temporal event, a site where matter and perception converge, revealing time's passage through condensation, sedimentation, and dissolution.

His practice resonates with Japanese aesthetics of and —the quiet awareness of transience and the beauty of imperfection—while also engaging with philosophical notions of “thingness," situating objects as temporal presences rather than static forms.

Wold's cross-disciplinary background informs this approach: he holds a BFA and MFA in Fine Art from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHIO), a BFA in Communication for Graphic Design from Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London, and has studied Theatre at CAL and Drawing and Painting at EAV Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Felleshus, Nordic Embassies (Berlin); Museum Angewandte Kunst (Frankfurt); RAM Galleri (Oslo); Pinakothek der Moderne (Munich); and Norsk Billedhoggerforening (Oslo). Wold's works are held in the collections of KODE Museum (Bergen), Pinakothek der Modern (Munich), KPMG Headquarters (London).
