Description

Maternity with a red veil, circa 1964

Color lithograph on vellum, signed and numbered 97/100 in blue pen, monogrammed and dated in the plate, on the back wet stamp "Collection Kimiyo Foujita, SVV Cornette de St Cyr June 13, 2007" and stamp and signature of Sylvie Buisson attesting to the authenticity of this plate.

Subject of a painting reproduced in the catalogue raisonné of Sylvie Buisson, Tl 63-09

This work, executed in a refined drawing style, depicts a mother breastfeeding her child. Delicate lines elegantly trace the contours of the two centralized figures. The mother, solemn and serene, gazes forward, veiled in a light peach-colored fabric. A gentle interaction is perceived between her protective hands and the vulnerable child she is feeding. The minimalist palette, combining subtle touches of beige and pale green, highlights the tenderness of the scene. The contrast between the fine black lines and the colored washes adds a subtle depth to the work. This drawing captures the timelessness and universality of the maternal bond, evoking both strength and tranquility. The artist succeeds in conveying intimacy and humanity through masterful simplicity.

Presentation

The Lewis Caroll of painting. This is how Jean Cocteau used to call Master Léonard Foujita Tsuguharu, referring to the naive side of some of his works. He is one of the most famous artists of the Roaring Twenties (1920-1929), both in style and by his sense of fun and his friendships with leading artists of the time, such as Picasso, Derain, Apollinaire, Modigliani, Soutine, Van Dongen, Chagall, Pascin, Zadkine and in general with all the artists who were part of the School of Paris at its beginnings.

He was a master of the brush stroke: influenced by Michelangelo, Poussin and Rodin, Tsuguharu Fujita is successful with his personal style, his shiny white backs that catch the light and the subtle contours in black ink of his subjects. Steeped in European modernity, he will retain a sober and Eastern accuracy, combining "the rigor of Japanese relating to freedom of Matisse," as he said himself. After his baptism, he will prénommer Leonardo, as a reference to Leonardo da Vinci.

Painter and printmaker, Leonard Foujita was also a draftsman, illustrator, sculptor, ceramist, photographer, filmmaker, designer fashion, designer ...
