With "Freddie", Popléa pays tribute to one of the most charismatic figures in the history of rock — Freddie Mercury — through a graphic process as refined as it is mesmerizing. The portrait of Queen's legendary frontman emerges from a score of vertical lines, as if his face were rising from the strings of an instrument or the sound waves of a microphone. This treatment evokes at once the vibration of a voice, the flicker of a vintage television image, and the retinal persistence of a myth that refuses to fade.
The artist masterfully plays with the viewer's perception: up close, the eye grasps only an abstract grid of vertical black strokes on a white ground; as one steps back, the iconic face reconstructs itself with striking obviousness. This technique, inherited from the Op Art experiments of Vasarely and the linear portraits of Youl, transforms the act of looking into an active experience. The viewer becomes an accomplice in the revelation — it is their gaze that composes the portrait.
The tight framing, in slight low angle, isolates the face against an immaculate white background that heightens the graphic power of the whole. One can make out the emblematic moustache, the strong features, the intensity of the gaze turned toward the horizon — a posture at once Christlike and rock, that of an artist at the height of his art. The chromatic minimalism — deep black on pure white — lends the work an almost sacred solemnity, reminiscent of Byzantine icons revisited through a contemporary aesthetic.
In the lower right, the small red heart signed brings the tender and playful touch that characterizes the artist's approach: a sensitive counterpoint to the graphic rigor, like a declaration of love to the figure portrayed. This heart is Popléa's signature mark, her way of signing her portraits of idols with affection and simplicity.
Printed in only 12 copies, this lithograph reflects a commitment to precious exclusivity. Each print, numbered and signed, becomes a rare object, destined for discerning contemporary art lovers and passionate rock music enthusiasts. is not merely a portrait: it is a visual vibration, the graphic trace of a voice that continues to resonate across the decades.
