Description
This refined embossed print is a remarkable example of Jan Schoonhoven's lifelong exploration of structure, rhythm and light.
Signed and dated in pencil lower right: Schoonhoven 1972.
Titled M-IV and numbered in pencil lower left.
Created entirely through relief without the use of ink, the composition consists of a meticulously ordered grid of subtle rectangular forms. Depending on the viewing angle and the changing incidence of light, the surface reveals an ever-changing interplay of shadows and highlights, transforming the work into a quiet yet dynamic visual experience. The almost monochrome appearance emphasizes Schoonhoven's fascination with order, repetition and the beauty of minimal variation.
Produced in 1972 as part of the celebrated portfolio Geprägte Strukturen, this edition demonstrates Schoonhoven's ability to translate his iconic white reliefs into graphic form while preserving their sculptural presence. The embossed surface invites close observation, revealing the precision and craftsmanship that define his work.
Embossing on heavy intaglio cardboard.
From the portfolio Geprägte Strukturen (1972).
Published by Edition Galerie m, Bochum and printed by Tünn Konerding.

Jan Schoonhoven (1914–1994) is regarded as one of the leading figures of post-war Dutch art and a key member of the influential Nul Group, alongside artists such as Henk Peeters, Armando and Jan Henderikse. Closely related to the international ZERO movement, Schoonhoven sought to eliminate personal expression in favour of structure, seriality and the interaction between light and surface.
His distinctive white reliefs and embossed works are represented in major museum collections worldwide, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and numerous international public and private collections. Today, his works are highly sought after by collectors of Minimalism, ZERO and post-war European art.

Presentation
Jan Schoonhoven (1914 - 1994) is considered one of the most important Dutch artists of the 20th century and was a central figure in the Nul movement, closely aligned with the international ZERO group. His works are defined by their absence of emotional expression, focusing instead on repetition, rhythm, and the use of pure white. Despite his growing international reputation, Schoonhoven continued to work as a civil servant in Delft until retirement and often created his artworks in the evenings, using modest materials such as cardboard and papier-mâché.
His minimalist works are featured in the collections of major museums, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Guggenheim Museum New York, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
