Description
The aesthetic here is based on a geometric decomposition of the face. The black line, sharp and precise, structures the composition into distinct zones. A play of contrasts is established between blocks of primary colors and graphic areas.
The gaze is divided. The left eye, blue, responds to the right eye, green. This chromatic duality fragments the portrait into two hemispheres. On the left, blue and white stripes bring a linear rhythm. On the right, a saturated red dominates half of the face.
The character wears a deep blue hat, adorned with a red circular detail. A fluid blue line outlines the whole, linking the elements together. The immaculate white background accentuates the clarity of the forms.
This creation is presented in the form of a screen print. It is part of a limited edition of 60 copies. The artist's signature appears in the bottom right of the composition.
Presentation
Jean-Louis Mendrisse is the son of Jean Mosnier, painter and sculptor. Born in Clermand Ferrand in 1955, he began painting at a young age, by inspiring from his father. He exhibited his first works in his Montmartre workshop in 1977, and hasn't left Paris since then.
As the years went by, the artist developed his creative process, in a jiffy. To begin with, he lays down the foundation of his work in acrylic, fills the empty part and then structures his work. Then comes the meticulous oil painting, which depicts skinny faces, expressions and other details. Eventually, the outcome comes along. One is confronted with mysterious, dreamlike works, it might be a colored or a white background. Red is recurrent: sometimes it's just a mere hint, but at times it floods the painting. His theme often revolves around women but the artist never tells the same story. Sometimes, the woman hesitates, other times she's pensive or provocative.
He followed the footsteps of his father, Jean-Louis Mendrisse is also acknowledged and exhibited by European galleries. He mainly exhibited in Luxembourg, France and Netherlands. His talents also won over USA.
