Description
From the series The Night and the Flame, issued in an edition of one hundred and ninety-five copies. The title returns to the Noche oscura of San Juan de la Cruz, the sixteenth-century Carmelite poem in which the soul leaves the house in darkness and is guided by nothing but the flame burning within it, a text that has drawn Spanish artists repeatedly for its austerity and its conjunction of absolute night with a single point of light. Amadeo Gabino (1922-2004), born in Valencia, was principally a sculptor in steel and aluminium and a founding member of the Parpalló group; his graphic work carries into two dimensions the same concern with the plane, the incision and the tempered metallic surface. The sheet measures 48.5 by 38 centimetres, a format shared with other literary homages in this collection, which suggests the series formed part of a collective publishing project of the period.
Presentation
Valencia 1922.
Spanish painter, sculptor and engraver son of the sculptor Alfonso Gabino. Amadeo started in the art assisting his father in his sculpture workshop. He began his studies at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia, which he completed in Rome, Paris, Hamburg and New York. His work consists mainly of complex abstract metal objects and constructivist collages. Amadeo Gabino has had a great variety of individual and collective exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, and has also been awarded several prizes, including the National Printing Prize, International Ibero-American Biennial, Mexico, in 1980.
