Description
From the series The Great Theatre of the World, issued in an edition of one hundred and seventy-five copies. Calderón de la Barca's auto sacramental of about 1655 supplies the subject: the world as a stage on which the Author distributes roles to King, Beauty, Rich Man, Labourer, Poor Man and Child, who play their parts without knowing the length of the performance, and are called back when it ends. The play furnished Spanish art with its most durable image of life as assigned role, and its combination of hierarchy, costume and abrupt dispossession suits a printmaker's economy of means. Andrés Barajas works in a figurative idiom in which the human presence remains legible while the setting is reduced to essentials. The sheet measures 48.5 by 38 centimetres, the format shared with the Delgado and Gabino sheets in this collection, further evidence that these belong to a single literary series published in the same campaign.
Presentation
Andrés Barajas was a Spanish painter and engraver, born in Huelma (Jaén) in 1941. Most of his work is devoted to graphic art. The infobox gives his birth date as 28 January 1941 and his death year as 2006.
His family moved to Madrid in 1952. In 1958 he began his artistic studies at the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas y Oficios Artísticos, and later completed his training at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. He traveled through Europe in the 1970s, where he was influenced by the Expressionist movement. In the 1980s he began teaching mural painting at the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas y Oficios Artísticos.
His work draws on the world of bullfighting, but with a different vision from other artists, introducing woman as a modern version of the myth of the rape of Europa.
