Description
Portrait on Black (2015) is a striking early figurative work by Ukrainian painter Zakhar Shevchuk, executed in oil and enamel on canvas. Measuring 70 × 60 cm, the painting presents a powerful male head emerging from a deep, glossy black field that functions as both space and psychological atmosphere. Unlike traditional portrait backgrounds, the black surface is constructed with enamel, creating a lacquered, reflective depth that contrasts dramatically with the organic texture of oil-painted skin.
This material duality is central to the work. The matte modelling of the face – built with subtle tonal transitions and controlled brushwork – is set against a polished void punctuated by small geometric insertions. The result is a tension between classical realism and contemporary abstraction. The portrait appears suspended in darkness, neither fully integrated into space nor detached from it. The composition anticipates Shevchuk’s later exploration of perception and identity, where figures seem to oscillate between presence and disappearance.
For collectors of contemporary figurative art, Portrait on Black represents a pivotal moment in the artist’s evolution. It combines academic foundation with experimental surface treatment, offering both technical mastery and conceptual resonance. The work bridges realism and material exploration, making it a compelling acquisition for those drawn to psychologically charged portraiture and refined modern aesthetics.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
