Description
This Relic, the second one of the series that conform the Future Relics, is the archeological object found in 2180 at 40°44'14.2"N 73°57'14.8"W, located in New York, being a 35mm Canon AE1. This camera has its own space in photography history, as it was the first one of its kind to include microprocessors and an absolute best seller of its time.

“The manipulation of people’s expectations is what I’m doing often. … People expect architecture to be solid. They don’t expect it to melt. People expect objects from the present to have a certain solidity about them. And when you can take a Canon camera … and make it out of crystal and cause it to appear eroded as if it’s been, you know, found in the future, they’re subtle shifts, right? … You’re confused by them … [and] they create really this uncanny sense. And for me … the idea of the uncanny is [what I’m] really about.” - Daniel Arsham

Presentation

Daniel Arsham, born in 1980 in the USA, is a renowned visual artist whose work explores the intersections of art, architecture, and performance. Arsham's works have been featured in numerous exhibitions across the globe, with his most recent solo exhibition in 2024 at the prestigious Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. His most recent project includes a collaboration with BTS, where he designed a series of sculptures and digital artworks inspired by the band's music and aesthetics. Additionally, Arsham's immersive art installations continue to push boundaries, blurring the lines between sculpture, architecture, and digital media.

Raised in Miami, Florida, Arsham pursued his studies at Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, where he continues to live and work today.

Arsham's creative practice often centers around eroded walls, landscapes adorned with futuristic structures, and the manipulation of forms, spaces, and volumes. His work is characterized by its playful exploration of materiality, often blurring the lines between the real and the imagined, inviting viewers to reconsider their perceptions of time, decay, and transformation.

One of Arsham's most significant collaborations was with legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham. For Cunningham, Arsham created a unique stage design and performed alongside him in the USA, France, and Australia, marking a distinctive fusion of visual art and performance. This partnership was followed by additional collaborations with choreographers, most notably Jonah Bokaer, which led to Arsham's participation at the prestigious Festival d'Avignon.

In 2013, Arsham collaborated with music producer Pharrell Williams, recreating Pharrell's first keyboard using volcanic ash, further showcasing his ability to merge art and pop culture in innovative ways.

Arsham's distinctive works can be found in galleries and collections worldwide. His innovative approach to monochromatic art continues to captivate audiences. Explore his works and many more in our collection of Artists Working in Monochrome, showcasing artists who experiment with color, texture, and form to create stunning visual experiences.
