Chapline’s unique aesthetic blurs the lines between an intangible digital realm and the reality of the analogue world, finding poetry in the contrast. When working with Case Studyo, the artist avidly seizes the opportunity of introducing his fantastical, otherworldly universe into the microcosm of our homes. For this edition, Chapline further explores a beloved, recurring theme in his work; the human form. By deconstructing his subjects into abstract flat shapes and reassembling them to compose new volumes, the artist manages to evoke the surreal experience of existential passion harnessed in digital form. A deliberate and bold choice of materials emphasises the inherent contradiction in his work; infusing cold steel with raw emotion.
Presentation
Jonathan Chapline incorporates analog and digital processes into his painting practice as he blurs the division between the real world and the virtual realm. The Brooklyn-based artist uses 3D-imaging software to recreate his own photographs and old magazine pictures, then replicates the images on canvas with acrylic and vinyl paints. His uncanny compositions, which resemble architectural renderings, feature blocky bodies and midcentury interiors shaded with bold blues, reds, purples, and pinks. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Chapline's work belongs in the collections of the X Museum in Beijing and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. The artist has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Basel, and London, among other cities. In addition to his paintings, Chapline also creates bright sculptures that feel plucked from the virtual world.
