Description
This work was originally a larger bust in the round, sculpted as an invention of the artist's own imagination. It was created first using water based clay – the current fragment was cast from the full piece. While most of the larges planes and minute deatail were devolped into the wet clay, later on, each of the features was delicately reworked in the hard jeweller's wax used during the final bronze casting. As the casting process used here has its own limitations, certain parts of the Masque had to be first rendered abstract.
Once the freshly cast Masque was extracted from the hot sand, it was immediately returned to the artist's own studio where it was finished and signed. The cast was first cleaned from any sand or oxide residue. Next, all traces of sprues and gated used during the casting process were removed and cut away. After the initial chasing was finished, the piece went under a lengthy process of grinding, buffing and polishing, carefully keeping the original surface left on the original wax yet enhancing and giving more force to the variou planes and different shapes. Certain planes of the finished piece were heavily retextured in the metal, as can be seen in the photos.
This cast was finished exclusively by the artist using traditional and modern methods and tooling.

Presentation
Ohad Ben-Ayala, b.1981 .
Lives and works in his studio in Tel-Aviv.
The sculptures presented on this profile reflect a decade of exploring bronze and other non ferrous metals as sculptural materials.
All of the works shown here at the moment were roughed out and modeled first (from nature or an invention) using another material – mostly water based clay or soft bee-wax.
Either way, more than one aspect of each work was always left unfinished, so it could be later resolved in the final metal it was cast in, and thus giving the metal more meaning than just a casting material.
This method was meant to find some middle way between the desire to create a single, unique and individual art piece – and at the same time develop multiple other versions, with all the possibilities offered by casting and re-casting each sculpture in different materials.
Traditional methods of chasing and repousse were combined with electric and pneumatic grinding, polishing, welding and soldering.
Various bronze alloys, aluminum and sometimes brass were cast using both sand casting and lost wax casting methods. With the founder's role limited to pouring the molten metal - Each sculpture is resolved and finished by the artist's own hands.
