From the series Behind Closed Doors. Hand-built plate with sgraffito and collaged transfers.
In this new series of wall plates, Behind Closed Doors, I reimagine source imagery from a book titled In Praise of the Backside. The book’s collection features women from behind, as captured most often by men, frequently untitled and anonymous. In my reinterpretation of these images, the women transcend their status as objects of line and shade, to become subjects with emotion, thought, and a place of belonging.
This artwork is a vibrant ceramic plate that depicts a serene domestic scene. The focal point is a woman lounging comfortably on a blue armchair, set against a backdrop of star-patterned wallpaper in soothing shades of teal and cream. Her relaxed posture, highlighted by a pink top and orange shorts, conveys a sense of tranquility. A vividly colored lampshade casts a gentle glow, enhancing the intimate atmosphere. To the left, a potted plant with lush foliage adds a touch of nature, while a stack of books hangs onto the wall, hinting at leisure and contemplation. The intricate geometric floor pattern in deep blue anchors the composition, providing contrast and depth. This piece uniquely merges everyday life with artistic expression, capturing an essence of homely comfort and introspective calmness.
Presentation
Alex Hodge, born in 1994, is a contemporary ceramic artist and sculptor based in Georgia, USA. She holds a degree in ceramics from the University of Georgia, where she graduated summa cum laude, and earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Miami, receiving several academic awards throughout her studies.
Her artistic practice offers a poetic and critical exploration of femininity through ceramic art. Drawing inspiration from classical antiquity, Greek vases, mythological figures, and female archetypes, Hodge creates works that blend personal storytelling with cultural symbolism. Her pieces often take the form of engraved porcelain cups, narrative wall reliefs, and objects inspired by prehistoric Venus figures, questioning notions of memory, love, strength, and vulnerability.
She employs techniques such as hand-building, sgraffito, painting, and sometimes applies gold leaf to enrich the surface of her ceramics. Each piece functions as a narrative fragment, often inscribed with emotional texts or poetic lines that reflect her inner world and broader reflections on womanhood.
Alex Hodge’s work has been exhibited in various galleries and institutions across the United States.
