Description
A daring gaze captures a moment of raw intimacy. This 2023 mixed media painting explores the female form with fearless precision. The composition centers on a nude figure reclining in a state of quiet vulnerability. Bold lines define the contours of the body. Rhythmic strokes create a sense of movement across the skin. A deep blue fabric anchors the scene. It contrasts sharply with the warm, earthy tones of the flesh. The circular format focuses the viewer's attention. It creates a private, voyeuristic window into a personal space. The artist challenges traditional gender roles through this honest depiction. Every curve is rendered with an experimental spirit. The artwork avoids idealization. Instead, it celebrates the authentic human presence. The brushwork remains sketchy and spontaneous. This technique adds an emotional layer to the portrait. It suggests a fleeting sensation caught on canvas. The interplay of light and shadow emphasizes the physical weight of the body. The scene settles into a balance of strength and fragility. The piece concludes with a soft focus on the surrounding interior details.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
