Description
In UrbanCat Gleam: Cityscape Light Sketch, Hiro Ando reimagines his iconic Urbancat through a luminous language where drawing and sculpture seamlessly converge.
Part of the series Feline Sketches Chronicles: Luminous Legends, the work reflects Ando’s evolving visual vocabulary within the Nippon Neo Pop movement.
Cut from black plexiglass and animated by LED backlighting, the figure appears as a monumental sketch emerging directly into space.
Resting on a discreet pedestal, the piece gives the impression that the character steps forward from the wall itself.
The bold contour evokes a spontaneous gesture drawn with a thick black marker, balancing urban immediacy with graphic precision.
Ando transforms line into volume, granting sculptural presence to a familiar character.
Urbancat embodies the adaptable inhabitant of modern cities, agile and resilient within constantly shifting urban environments.
The luminous halo surrounding the figure recalls the glow of neon lights across contemporary Japanese metropolises.
Shadow and light interact, symbolizing the tension between urban excitement and contemporary solitude.
The minimalist drawing contrasts with the powerful visual presence of the illuminated installation.
Each contour demonstrates Ando’s mastery in blending pop culture, manga influences, and Japanese graphic traditions.
The sculpture captures metropolitan energy while maintaining the playful spirit characteristic of the artist’s universe.
This duality reflects Ando’s psychology, oscillating between visual humor and subtle observation of urban behavior.
Light functions as narrative, presenting a figure suspended between fiction and everyday reality.
Viewers are invited to project their own journeys within the luminous chaos of modern cities.
The apparent simplicity conceals technical sophistication, where each line becomes a visual architecture.
UrbanCat emerges as a pop guardian of contemporary cities, merging gentle satire with affectionate homage to urban life.
The series confirms Ando’s ongoing desire to reinvent his icons through innovative luminous sculptural forms.
This work perfectly synthesizes technology, pop culture, and Japanese graphic heritage.
Its immediate visual impact makes it an ideal acquisition for collectors seeking a strong contemporary sculptural presence.
Acquiring this work represents a rare opportunity to secure a luminous emblematic piece within the evolution of Japanese Neo Pop art.
UrbanCat Gleam stands as a distinctive signature within Hiro Ando’s luminous sculptural trajectory.
Presentation
Hiro Ando was born in 1973 on the island of Shikoku in Japan. Hiro Ando started his career as an illustrator in 1995. In 2005 he founded with Saori Nakamishi an artist studio in Tokyo to manage the creation and promotion of other young neo-pop artists who express their own popular culture in their creations. Today the studio "Crazynoodles" has ten artists.
Hiro Ando is a versatile artist. He works in oil on canvas, digital media or video. His technique consists of making several sketches before painting on canvas. The painting shapes itself and emerges in the streets of Tokyo at night, and combines lots of colors and graphics. Hiro paints dark cityscapes and goldfish all over the canvas.
The marriage of the two subjects makes the whole of the painting dynamic and violent, with a strange feeling of eternity given by the goldfish which recall old Japanese paintings and watercolors. The sculpture is a recent addition to the media used by Ando, who started working on a series of orange, green sculptures ... inspired by Japanese popular culture. Thus the cat, which is a lucky charm in Japan, like the Maneki-Neko, takes different forms such as the samurai or the sumo wrestler.
The artist translates this theme into a modern style. The shiny and smooth materials, the vivid colors, the brutal but rounded shapes of Hiro Ando's sculptures take us to the world of manga in which the artist's generation grew up. Hiro Ando's art is the meeting between the Meiji era and Manga, he is Shogun in the world of Pokemon, he is traditional Japan seen through the eyes of young people: he certainly belongs to Japanese neo pop art.
