Description
Luke Newton created his first pencil gun when he realized that weapons could turn into childish objects and play down those tools that cause so much casualties and misery. This work is part of the artist's conceptual approach. A pencil gun is another way of saying create, draw, imagine but above all don't wage war.
Luke Newton, originally from Colne in Northern England, studied art at Saint Martin’s in London before moving to France, where he now lives and works between Roubaix and Paris.
With sharp British humor, his exhibition critiques the flaws of modern society through collage, sculpture, and painting. Newton transforms everyday materials—grocery packaging into skulls, pencils into guns, hearts into blades—playfully reassigning meaning to the banal.
His works, polished and industrial in appearance, often produced in series with subtle variations, conceal strong conceptual depth. Beneath their pop and manufactured aesthetic lies a provocative paradox, inviting viewers to question the symbols of daily life. As the artist notes, “The key is to open the door."
