Description
"Rilke Murmuration" by Jake Michael Singer is an extraordinary sculpture crafted from mild steel, evoking a sense of ethereal beauty and graceful movement. The title hints at the mesmerizing spectacle of murmurations – the synchronized flight patterns of birds.
The sculpture consists of meticulously welded pieces of mild steel, delicately intertwined to form a mesmerizing structure reminiscent of wings in motion. Each individual component is seamlessly fused together, resulting in a cohesive and fluid design that appears weightless and airy despite its material composition.
Presentation
Jake Michael Singer (1991, Johannesburg) is a transdisciplinary artist coalescing sculpture, photography and painting, whose practice is primarily concerned with materiality, myth and catharsis.
Most recently over the past two years Singer has focussed his attention toward large scale site specific installations in historically significant edifices of Istanbul Yedikule Hisarı (during the 17th Istanbul Biennal, 2022) and Küçük Mustafa Paşa Hamamı (2021).
Singer holds a degree from Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town (2013) and has studied at Central Saint Martins, London. He is the recipient of the Eduardo Vila Foundation Grant in 2016 and 2017. Permanent public sculptures include Dawn Chorus (2019), Johannesburg; Roarks Evacuation Plan (2016), Johannesburg and Flume, Istanbul (forthcoming). Singer has completed residencies in Istanbul, Amsterdam, Kampala and Cologne.
