Dieu Nature, 2012

Eric de Gésincourt

This sculptural work is a striking and dynamic representation of the human form, exploiting the juxtaposition of rustic and industrial metal materials. The figure, carved from an intricate assemblage of twisted and welded metal rods, evokes the raw strength and intrinsic power of human nature. The rods, meticulously arranged, create a threadlike structure that suggests both an innate robustness and an apparent fragility. Two large metal panels, aging and eroded by rust, are attached to the figure's arms, similar to protective shields. Their faded blue color creates a striking contrast with the earthy brown of the wire structure, adding a captivating visual element to the whole. This choice of materials gives the sculpture a timeless character, testifying to both permanence and ephemerality. The figure's posture, with its arms outstretched and shields outstretched, projects an image of defense and confrontation, inviting the viewer to reflect on themes of resilience and protection. The base of the sculpture resembles a metal grid, suggesting a firmly anchored base while providing a sense of lightness and transparency. In short, this work is a magnificent example of artistic ingenuity and innovation. It captures the essence of conflict and protection while highlighting the tension between robustness and fragility, making this sculpture not only a technical feat but also a poetic reflection on the human condition.
