Description
Book Sculpture
Signed by Alexander Korzer-Robinson
This artwork is a vivid and intricate illustration inspired by the timeless fantasy world of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." At the forefront, the scene captures an eccentric tea party, bustling with character and charm, led by Alice herself, seamlessly weaving through a symphony of animated figures. Dominating the composition is the Mad Hatter and the March Hare, their expressions infused with whimsical chaos. The Hatter, with his iconic oversized hat, engages energetically in conversation, while the March Hare exudes an eccentric flair, embodying the essence of Wonderland's unpredictable nature. In the background, the Cheshire Cat's enigmatic grin hovers ethereally above the fray, adding an element of mystery and enchantment. The Queen of Hearts, recognizable by her regal attire and authoritative demeanor, peers over the scene with an air of commanding presence, encapsulating her role as the fearsome ruler of this fantastical realm. A defining feature of this illustration is the intricate detailing and the harmonious fusion of fantastical elements with a touch of realism, skillfully highlighting the bizarre yet captivating world Lewis Carroll envisioned. Each character is meticulously rendered, their unique personalities vividly brought to life through expressive linework and a textured palette. The entire scene is framed by a border of ornate, floral patterns, enhancing the artwork's allure with a vintage, storybook charm. This illustration invites the viewer to delve into a world where logic is defied, and imagination reigns supreme, celebrating the enduring magic of Carroll's creation.
Presentation
Alexander Korzer-Robinson is a UK-based artist whose work transforming antiquarian books has brought him international acclaim. Working mainly in collage and related techniques, the practice's focus are sculptural artworks made from antiquarian books.
The base material for his "cut book sculptures" are old books that have been stripped of their utilitarian value by the passage of time. Working through a book, page by page, a new composition is formed using only the contents of the original volume.
Alexander Korzer-Robinson: 'The use of antiquarian books makes the work at the same time an exploration and a deconstruction of nostalgia. We create our own past from fragments of reality in a process that combines the willful aspects of remembering and forgetting with the coincidental and unconscious.'
