Description
In Fivefold Sumowarriors: Spirits of the Ritual Pantheon, Hiro Ando unfolds a sculptural constellation where the sumotori figure becomes both chromatic symbol and spiritual archetype.
Presented within the series Sacred Miniatures: Chromatic Guardians Spirits, these five miniature presences embody the meeting point between Japanese ritual heritage and contemporary Neo Pop aesthetics.
Each Sumowarrior adopts the grounded, ceremonial stance of the sacred wrestler, here transformed into a playful yet universal icon.
The green figure evokes balance and natural vitality, recalling humanity’s ancestral bond with the earth.
Deep blue expresses introspection and collective memory, lending the sculpture a contemplative dimension.
The white figure introduces visual silence, symbolizing renewal and spiritual purity.
Radiant yellow conveys clarity and awakening energy, echoing ceremonial illumination.
Finally, vibrant orange radiates force, movement, and popular vitality.
Though sharing identical forms, each figure asserts a unique identity through the emotional resonance of color.
Ando subtly transforms the monumental sumo archetype into an intimate contemporary guardian.
The rounded sculptural volumes become metaphors for emotional stability in an increasingly unstable modern world.
Through monochrome treatment, each silhouette turns into a minimalist, instantly recognizable totem.
This pentalogy continues Ando’s exploration of dialogue between cultural legacy and global visual culture.
It also reveals his ongoing fascination with protective figures reimagined through humor and softness.
The ensemble operates like a silent chorus in which each color embodies a distinct emotional register.
Displayed together, the figures create a ritual-like harmony of presence and equilibrium.
Viewers oscillate between playful pop fascination and almost ceremonial contemplation.
The work perfectly synthesizes Ando’s ability to translate deeply Japanese symbols into universal visual language.
The miniature scale enhances emotional proximity, making each figure feel almost personal.
For collectors, acquiring this pentalogy means securing a rare chromatic and symbolic synthesis within Ando’s oeuvre.
It represents an exceptional opportunity to integrate a powerful expression of Nippon Neo Pop into a contemporary art collection.
Presentation
Hiro Ando was born in 1973 on the island of Shikoku in Japan. Hiro Ando started his career as an illustrator in 1995. In 2005 he founded with Saori Nakamishi an artist studio in Tokyo to manage the creation and promotion of other young neo-pop artists who express their own popular culture in their creations. Today the studio "Crazynoodles" has ten artists.
Hiro Ando is a versatile artist. He works in oil on canvas, digital media or video. His technique consists of making several sketches before painting on canvas. The painting shapes itself and emerges in the streets of Tokyo at night, and combines lots of colors and graphics. Hiro paints dark cityscapes and goldfish all over the canvas.
The marriage of the two subjects makes the whole of the painting dynamic and violent, with a strange feeling of eternity given by the goldfish which recall old Japanese paintings and watercolors. The sculpture is a recent addition to the media used by Ando, who started working on a series of orange, green sculptures ... inspired by Japanese popular culture. Thus the cat, which is a lucky charm in Japan, like the Maneki-Neko, takes different forms such as the samurai or the sumo wrestler.
The artist translates this theme into a modern style. The shiny and smooth materials, the vivid colors, the brutal but rounded shapes of Hiro Ando's sculptures take us to the world of manga in which the artist's generation grew up. Hiro Ando's art is the meeting between the Meiji era and Manga, he is Shogun in the world of Pokemon, he is traditional Japan seen through the eyes of young people: he certainly belongs to Japanese neo pop art.
