Description
With their clean lines and simple shapes, the "Culbutos," most often static, oscillate, sway, and hesitate before finding a point of stability. Through them, the artist explores imbalance and balance, instability and stability, strength and fragility. For her, the "Culbutos" are also the graphic representation of the quintessential "symbolic object," embodying the resilience described by ethologist and neuropsychiatrist Boris Cyrulnik. In popular culture, isn't the roly-poly toy, in fact, "a person who always gets back up despite the blows they receive"? The design and names of her sculptures are also a nod to the world of childhood.
That of spinning tops, abacuses or Gömböcs, just like that of words whose sound makes one smile: The "roly-poly toys", the "In single file" or the "Echinoidea", adorned with clothing elements, sometimes two-headed, they advance with their heads down, their bodies staggering like ordinary heroes.
Technique: glazed stoneware, white chamotte clay, raku firing, smoke firing
Presentation
A ceramic sculptor, Florence Lemiegre lives and works in Upper Normandy. She is a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. For thirty years, the artist has been exploring clay and delighting in experimentation, particularly through raku. This ancestral glazing technique brings rich and deep textures and colors to her works.
Working in collections, major themes emerge in his creative approach with "Les Culbutos" and "Les Moons." The Moons form a rich flowerbed retracing the cycle of the seasons. His culbutos are a graphic and playful work of research on balance and imbalance.
Today, his works in earthenware and contemporary stoneware are presented in numerous galleries, biennials, exhibitions and contemporary art centers in France and abroad.
The artist received the Taylor Foundation Sculpture Prize in 2018. She has worked with Galerie Isabelle Laverny since 2005.
