Description
Takahiro Oyama's sculptural practice brings together the flamboyant figures of drag queens and the solemn presence of Buddhist statuary, exploring the boundaries between beauty and ugliness, the sacred and the profane, and tradition and contemporary culture.
In contrast to his monumental wood sculptures, this work is crafted using , a traditional papier-mâché technique associated with folk toys from his native Iwate, Japan. The choice of material and technique lends the figure a lightness and a playful, joyful character, offering a different expression of the artist's distinctive vision.
Rooted in local folk traditions yet embracing the expressive freedom of drag, the sculpture celebrates individuality, humor, and the unexpected connections between seemingly contrasting worlds. With its cheerful presence and spirited charm, the work invites viewers to encounter Oyama's artistic universe from a more intimate and playful perspective.
Presentation

Their work portrays the human figure, embodying contradictory beauty and paradox. Major activities include ART FAIR GINZA in 2023 and the solo exhibition 'The Eight Million Faces' (tagboart gallery) in 2024. Major awards include the Contemporary Art Award at the Iwate Art Festival Art Exhibition in 2021 and the Jury Special Award at Independent Tokyo 2022.
