Description
Painting serves a specific function in this proposal: to evoke an exterior and distance us from it. Through short brushstrokes, small dabs of color point to the primary sources of light that articulate the composition, suggesting what we imagine might be a red traffic light or a lit streetlight. The airbrush strips away any trace of defined lines, blending the contours of the lights into one another and creating depth. Where transparency once was, darker tones now surface—shadows of passersby talking mere centimeters away from the vehicle when held up in traffic. It is precisely upon acquiring full opacity through the paint that we can perceive, through the window, the noise of a world in motion.
This proposal stems directly from the influence of Marc Augé’s (2000) theory of non-places. Through it, I seek to represent modern space and time, where modes of transport have become yet another environment to inhabit. I am not interested in leaving my mark on how I construct the window, but rather on how I deconstruct it in relation to speed. This structural element is thus transformed, shifting from sculpture to canvas and support for the painting.
The chosen technique, the airbrush allows me to capture the images that flood the present when we do not look at it directly. Powered by compressed air, it enables me to paint without leaving any trace of brushwork, producing ethereal, almost phantasmagorical images.
Presentation
Juncal Alma holds a BA in Fine Arts from UVigo and an MA in Visual Arts from U. do Porto, working between Galicia and Madrid. Her practice questions contemporary painting, approaching it as a process of observation rather than a fixed technique. She expands the limits of the medium by shifting its physical supports: from acrylic resin wall extractions () to transit elements like subway windows and mirrors. Utilizing airbrushing, oil, and digital technology (AI), her work explores memory, affectivity, and transience. Awarded 2nd prize at the Bienal do Eixo Atlántico (2025), she has exhibited at institutions such as MARCO in Vigo.
