Description
Porcelain vase with underglaze Sgraffito detailing. This vase is a derivative of my Portrait collection; the vase features a woman on each side, one with a fire at her throat, and the other with a pattern, which may be interpreted as rain or seeds. They are surrounded by olive-toned plant life and become one with the overgrown environment.
This artwork is a uniquely shaped ceramic vase, distinguished by its elegant, elongated form and subtly flared neck. The surface is enveloped in a rich, deep blue-green glaze, creating a lush, tranquil backdrop reminiscent of a serene forest. The artist employs a fine, white line technique to etch a captivating scene onto the vase's surface. In the forefront, a delicately rendered figure, perhaps a reflection of classical or mythical inspiration, holds an instrument, captured in a moment of calm and introspection. Surrounding the figure, intricate leafy motifs are etched, adding a dynamic sense of movement and life, intertwining gracefully with the figure. These elements are highlighted by a harmonious use of negative space, creating depth and contrast against the dark background. The unique decorative approach blends traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, resulting in a piece that is both timeless and contemporary. This artwork stands out for its masterful integration of form and surface decoration, inviting viewers into its tranquil yet intricate world.
Presentation
Alex Hodge, born in 1994, is a contemporary ceramic artist and sculptor based in Georgia, USA. She holds a degree in ceramics from the University of Georgia, where she graduated summa cum laude, and earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Miami, receiving several academic awards throughout her studies.
Her artistic practice offers a poetic and critical exploration of femininity through ceramic art. Drawing inspiration from classical antiquity, Greek vases, mythological figures, and female archetypes, Hodge creates works that blend personal storytelling with cultural symbolism. Her pieces often take the form of engraved porcelain cups, narrative wall reliefs, and objects inspired by prehistoric Venus figures, questioning notions of memory, love, strength, and vulnerability.
She employs techniques such as hand-building, sgraffito, painting, and sometimes applies gold leaf to enrich the surface of her ceramics. Each piece functions as a narrative fragment, often inscribed with emotional texts or poetic lines that reflect her inner world and broader reflections on womanhood.
Alex Hodge’s work has been exhibited in various galleries and institutions across the United States. Through powerful series like Fragments of Our Love Story and Behind Closed Doors, she redefines the representation of women in art, embracing a deeply personal yet universal vision grounded in feminism, emotional memory, and art historical reference.
