The Venice Biennale 2022
First established in 1895, the Venice Biennale is a cultural institution based in Venice, Italy. The organization has supported the arts for over 120 years and is at the center of research and advancement of contemporary art throughout the global creative landscape. The institution does this through a number of initiatives which include various events that focus on specific sectors, such as arts, cinema, architecture, music, theater, and dance. The Venice Biennale now welcomes more than 500,000 visitors in a span of several months, making it the world's biggest art exhibition.
The 59th International Art Exhibition returns to Venice from April 23rd to November 27th, 2022. The 2022 edition is curated by Cecilia Alemani. Alemani is the first Italian woman to curate the exhibition and understands the expansive impact her decisions will have on the international art community. Because of this, she chose 213 artists with precision and care. Among these artists, only 21 are male-identifying, a first for the Venice Biennale. It is the International Art Exhibition's first-ever female majority catalog.
The title of the 2022 edition is, “The Milk of Dreams," which references a series of drawings by Surrealist artist Leonora Carrington. Alemani declared that the edition will focus on three specific ideas of artistic inspiration: evolving representations of the human form, relationships to technology, and the association between people and the planet. The show will highlight more than 1,000 artworks.
