Description
This intriguing artwork presents a fusion of human and avian forms, capturing a moment of intense transformation or symbiotic existence. Dominating the canvas is a semi-nude human figure, seemingly blending or emerging with large, elegant birds. The focal point is the figure's expressive, almost anguished face, turned upwards with a mouth open, possibly in a yell or song, evoking a powerful sense of emotion and movement. The birds, with their long necks and pointed beaks, add a surreal and almost mythical quality to the piece. Their bodies intertwine with the human figure, creating a fluid and dynamic sense of motion. The interplay of the feathers and human skin is masterfully rendered, with delicate, precise brushstrokes, highlighting the texture and contrasting forms. The background is a swirling mix of muted browns, blacks, and oranges, adding depth and intensity to the scene. This color palette enhances the dramatic and somewhat mysterious atmosphere, drawing the viewer into the narrative. The use of chiaroscuro – the contrast of light and shadow – further accentuates the dramatic tension and the extraordinary nature of the figure's transformation. This artwork stands out due to its ability to merge the boundaries between human and animal, the real and the fantastical, evoking themes of metamorphosis, unity, and the essence of human emotion. The artist's technique, characterized by bold, sweeping strokes and a keen attention to detail, makes this piece a compelling study of form, motion, and emotion.
Presentation
Guy Ghazanchyan is a contemporary Armenian painter and sculptor, born in 1991 in Yerevan into a family of renowned artists. The son of painters Gagik Ghazanchyan and Lilit Soghomonyan, and grandson of sculptor Nona Gabrielyan, he was immersed in a rich and stimulating artistic universe from a very young age.
He studied painting at the Armenian State Academy of Fine Arts from 2007 to 2013, graduating with the highest distinction, the Eduard Isabekyan Prize, for his work I Know Where It's Flying. In 2012, he was selected for a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, an experience that marked a turning point in his artistic career.
Ghazanchyan's work explores profound themes such as freedom, identity, and collective memory, often through expressive portraits and symbolic compositions. His major series include Behind the Walls (2016), awarded the Presidential Youth Award; AKANates (2021), exhibited at the Yerevan Museum of Modern Art; and IUVENIS (2022), which celebrates contemporary Armenian youth.
His works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions around the world, including in Washington DC (Traveling Without Moving, 2017), Rome (Subconscious is Freedom, 2025), Zurich, Naples, Groningen, Beirut, and Los Angeles. In 2019, he became a member of the Artists' Union of Armenia.
